Third ‘Antimagic Academy’ Japanese Anime DVD/BD Cover Art Arrives

3 min read

Antimagic Academy VisualKadokawa is handling the home video release in Japan for Antimagic Academy and ahead of its debut they brought out a lot of information for it early on. With the first volume having been released this weekend and the second volume about a month away, they’ve now unleashed a look at the packaging design for the third volume of the series due out on February 26th, 2016. The series is getting a set of six volumes on DVD and Blu-ray that are all limited editions. They’ll be priced at 6,660 yen and 7,600 yen respectively with the first volume released  on December 25th, 2015.

The show, which is being produced by Silver Link for the animation, recently revealed that Kosuke Kawamura is on board to handle the character designs. Kawamura has done some interesting work recently on both shows like Mayo Chiki! and OniAi, but has largely served previously as working on key animation and an animation director for various episodes of fanservice oriented shows. The series premiered on October 7th, 2015  with Afilia Saga performing the opening song for the series while Kanako Ito performed the ending song for it.

The cast includes Yoshimasa Hosoya as Takeru Kusanagi, Reina Ueda as Ouka Ohtori, Rumi Ookubo as Usagi Saionji, Ryoko Shiraishi as Ikaruga Suginami, Kanae Ito as Mari Nikaido, Iori Nomizu as Lapis Lazuli, Koji Yusa as Haunted, Natsumi Yamada as Nagaru Hoshijiro, Shinichiro Miki as Sougetsu Ohtori and Chika Anzai as Kiseki Kusanagi.

The project itself was originally announced in the spring of 2014 and has been light on information in general. We learned awhile ago that Tomoyuki Kawamura has boarded the project as the series director. Kawamura was involved with last year’s series Kamigami no Asobi and has done individual episode direction for Gundam Reconguista in G. Kawamura will be directing based on scripts from Kento Shimoyama.

The series is based on the light novels from Touki Yanagimi. The series gets a translation of AntiMagic Academy “The 35th Test Platoon” and it’s been running since the spring of 2012 with nine volumes out so far. The novels have a pretty good artist on them as well with Kippu, whose been involved in the illustrations for the No-Rin series as well that got an adaptation previously. A manga adaptation began back in late 2012 as well which is fairly standard practice for a lot of light novels these days.

Plot concept: The story is set in the world the people with magical powers on the edge of ruin. The top of the military power has moved from swords to magic, then to guns now. AntiMagic Academy was founded to train inquisitors to crack down on the remaining threat of the magical powers. The protagonist Takeru Kusanagi is a student of the academy and belongs to the 35th test platoon, a scratch team of poor students. While having no talent for guns, he has studied to be an inquisitor with his only merit, kenjyutsu (swordsmanship). One day, Ouka Outori, a super elite student who has the license to witch-hunt, joins his platoon. She is nicknamed as “Calamity,” since she actually shot a criminal to death in the past. As the leader of the platoon, Takeru starts working with her on a mission to retrieve Magical Heritage.
