JK-Meshi Episode #05 Anime Review

JK-Meshi Episode 5Now I want a Fashion: Impossible movie.

What They Say:
In Japanese, “JK” is an abbreviation for “joshi kousei”, or high school girl, and “meshi” means “cooked rice” or “meal”, so it is only suitable that the anime focuses on 3 high school girls, Reina, Ryoka, and Ruriko, who have mastered the art of cooking simple, B-class dishes called JK meshi.

The Review:

Sometiems throwaway lines or gags can make for some fun, which is what kicks things off here as we get a couple of the girls talking about the recent Fashion: Impossible movie and how it was just a poorly done spy movie. That makes for some cute comments until Ruriko falls outside from the floor above. Don’t ask why as she doesn’t understand why it’s weird that she does so and then it goes into bits about canceled classes and waiting for Ruriko. The show has done some pretty random episodes so far so this doesn’t surprise me much at all, but it’s just such an odd bit that it feels strange even for this show. Thankfully, the show moves onto the food of the week and that’s margherita pizza, or zzapi as Ruriko calls it just to be quirky.

In Summary:
They go for some interesting pizza designs here and while I do adhere to the belief that there’s no such thing as bad pizza, Japanese pizza always makes me a bit afraid. This episode feels even more offbeat and quirky than it usually does – in a bad way – as it doesn’t feel like there’s enough cohesion to what little we get. It gets a mild save due to the pizza side of things but it’s Japanese pizza and that’s not worthy quite as many points.
