This fall has seen a lot of natural Star Wars interest out there and the global franchise is one that definitely draws in a wide range of fans. With the release of the new trailer this week and a slew of events that will be happening in the coming two months before the premiere of the film, there’s also a lot of great reading material to dig into. The folks at ComiXology have put together a storefront for the digital comics side that’s definitely worth checking out.
We definitely recommend the new series that are out as part of their Essential Star Wars section and Get Ready for The Force Awakens. With past comic work being placed in the “Legends” category and not considered canon anymore, these two sections have books that are part of both the new continuity and the previous one, so you have to be a bit careful in that sense if you’re wanting to stick with a particular side. The new books created with Marvel that are considered continuity and lay foundations for things that are going to appear elsewhere. The Darth Vader series tops the list for me, but the Princess Leia and Lando series are stellar as well.
I also have a soft spot in my heart for those Omnibus Collections as well there are those that bring out the original Marvel Comics works from the late 70’s and into the 80’s, which is what got me into comics in general. Those can be found in the Star Wars: The Original Ongoing Series section.
For manga fans, there’s a whole section there that covers the film adaptations, including the two installments created for The Phantom Menace. A New Hope was done by Hisao Tamaki, The Empire Strikes Back by Toshiki Kudo and Return of the Jedi by Shinichi Hiromoto. All those editions have great Adam Warren covers. The Phantom Menace was done by Kia Asamiya, who also did the covers for them that link together.
