Guillermo del Toro Still Hopeful For ‘Pacific Rim’ Sequel

There’s a lot of studio politics in play at the moment between Legendary Pictures and Universal Pictures that stems from some personal aspects of the players involved, which makes it a complicated and rather fluid situation. With Legendary setting up shop with Warner Bros. for the Kong: Skull Island feature and working with them on the Godzilla sequel, Universal has put up a few more walls in working with that partner at the moment.

One of those films impacted is the Pacific Rim sequel, which was set for an August 4th, 2017 release date. With the Hollywood Reporter talking about the moves between the studios earlier this week, it was mentioned that the film was halted indefinitely and that it might not see the light of day at all, though that felt more like the writer’s view than anything from the studio.

Now Entertainment Weekly has reported that director Guillermo del Toro is still working on the project.

“As far as I’m concerned, [the Pacific Rim sequel is] not gone.”

“We are still turning in a screenplay and a budget in three weeks.”

We’ll keep holding out hope that the sequel comes to fruition, especially since there is an animated project in the works as well that could be impacted by this.
