After putting up with so many distractions from her classroom neighbor Seki, Rumi Yokoi quietly begins to assert her will on a number of Seki’s games.

Seki starts this volume by excavating his desk, finding a fossil and getting worked up in the process as usual. Following this Seki tries on some glasses, and ends up crushing Yokoi’s heart in the end. Next up comes a battle between shogi and chess, with darkness being a key element. This is followed by a foray into palm reading, which takes down both our heroes in the process.
Goto makes her first appearance of the volume in the next chapter. When Yokoi is absent, Seki has a go at paper sumo with his usual degree of fervor, and of course Goto reads way too much into it. Seki then produces a rather incredible flipbook, albeit one with a rather disappointing ending. An amusing change of pace is then brought about by snowfall, which ends in Yokoi once more fighting to protect something cute. Seki gets a bit frazzled in the next chapter, when his inconsiderate classmate Uzawa messes with his carefully crafted eraser.
Next up, Seki gets his driver’s license and plays baseball. In the chapter after, we actually get a minor character introduction in the form of Seki’s little sister, who definitely has a good bit of her brother’s intensity. Finally, as the volume winds down, the robot family find themselves in grave danger, Seki prepares tea, and lastly he discovers gold!
In Summary
Though it’s hard to say this volume does anything particularly new, its set of gags really do hit the mark more than last volume. They do follow a bit of a recognizable pattern, but there are some really great chapters here that definitely feel fresh. In particular, Yokoi herself really steps things up a bit here, getting a bit more involved in the madness than she has in the past. Chapters such as the one with snow and the one with the driving test are still a ton of fun, and we do even get a small character introduction in the form of Seki’s sister to help keep things fresh. It may not break any new ground after previous volumes, but this book is full of laughs and sure to please, so be sure to give it a try.
