Progress continues on the pre-production side of War of the Planet of the Apes, the third installment of the relaunch that began a few years ago. After some casting that hit last month, it’s now been revealed that Woody Harrelson has joined the film in the role of the villain known only as the Colonel. With the show ejecting the human cast that it had the last time around, much as that film did with the first film, only Andy Serkis is returning so far as Caesar. Which, depending on how Harrelson’s role shapes up, could have him in either human or ape form and make for a solid series of engagements between the two actors.
Harrelson’s career has long been interesting to watch, especially if you were like me and saw him for the first time when he took on a decidedly difficult role in Cheer following the death of the actor that played Coach, but in the last few years he’s had a solid supporting role in the Hunger Games films that connected him with a younger audience while engaging an older audience with True Detective in a way that was revelatory.
Set for July 14th, 2017. War of the Planet of the Apes will directed based on a script co-written with Mark Bomback. The film stars Andy Serkis, Woody Harrelson and Gabriel Chavarria.
