The first trailer for The Martian certainly brought a lot of attention to the project and it got a lot of people interested in not only the film but the novel. We’ve had some interesting clip material arrive since then but now Fox is bringing out their latest trailer for it. And while most trailers run for just two and a half minutes this one clocks in at just over three. The tone here is certainly different than what we got with the first trailer and it has some new footage as well while upping the intensity of it in a couple of interesting ways.
The film is the adaptation of the novel by Andy Weir that’s directed by Ridley Scott. The film is Ridley Scott’s fourth science fiction film, with Alien and Blade Runner done in 1979 and 1982 respectively, and then Prometheus in 2012. The novel from Andy Weir came out in 2011 as an ebook and only last year as a physical book in hardcover form as publishers had passed it over originally, prompting Weir to release it for free on his own site at first and then on Kindle for 99 cents.
The film stars Matt Damon, Jessica Chastain, Kristen Wiig, Kate Mara, Michael Peña, Jeff Daniels, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Donald Glover. The film is set for release on October 2nd, 2015
Plot concept: During a manned mission to Mars, Astronaut Mark Watney (Matt Damon) is presumed dead after a fierce storm and left behind by his crew. But Watney has survived and finds himself stranded and alone on the hostile planet. With only meager supplies, he must draw upon his ingenuity, wit and spirit to subsist and find a way to signal to Earth that he is alive. Millions of miles away, NASA and a team of international scientists work tirelessly to bring “the Martian” home, while his crewmates concurrently plot a daring, if not impossible rescue mission. As these stories of incredible bravery unfold, the world comes together to root for Watney’s safe return. Based on a best-selling novel, and helmed by master director Ridley Scott, THE MARTIAN features a star studded cast that includes Jessica Chastain, Kristen Wiig, Kate Mara, Michael Peña, Jeff Daniels, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Donald Glover.
Love that, also today, NASA’s starting to put out a few tie-in promotions to their own work.
The book’s a fun read for hard-sci-fi fans, perfect for adaptation. Outside of the ideas and plotting, not always the best writing…but it should be great to have the movie compliment that. Very looking forward to this one.
