Ranpo Kitan: Game of Laplace Episode #04 Anime Review

2 min read

Rampo Kitan Episode 4Skulking around.

What they say:
A man who calls himself Twenty Faces commits a series of murders. His victims are all criminals who have escaped justice and have not atoned for their crimes. Before he kills, he posts a message on the Internet to explain who he’s going to kill and why.

The Review:
Content:
A mysterious antihero vigilante named Twenty Face is committing murders of criminals and posting about it on the internet. The core cast discusses this in Akechi’s office. After a bit of fan service on the part of Kobayashi and some more back and forth we cut to Koabayashi and his classmates at school the next day watching the news and speculating. The general consensus is that the villain from the previous episode will be Twenty Faces’ next target as he was just released from prison.

Akechi decides to pay a visit to a deeply disturbed dominatrix (who I pray is not integral to the show moving forward). This week’s villain has (as speculated) captured and attempted to murder last week’s but is thwarted by Akechi. Kobayashi explains that Twenty Faces was (as explained at the top of the review) a person who was trying to take justice into his own hands by murdering criminals who escape the law. Last week’s villain escapes and this week’s villain’s identity is revealed. Presumably next week we will find out his motivations.

In Summary:
This was probably the worst episode thus far and the main reason is the weird dominatrix character who feels so out of place in the series. Her aside, the episode was about par for the course. The art direction continues to be the best part of the show though it feels dialed back from previous episodes. Really the show is best at spectacle, writing does not seem to be one of Ranpo’s strong suits. I can’t help but wonder if it is held back by its run time: mysteries are resolved moments of being introduced and this week’s was particularly underwhelming.

Grade: C+

  1. Alright, I kinda joked about this on the last one, but this is just…
I constantly get annoyed on this site by how bad Chris’s writing is. But, if you can get past his bad writing, at least the articles themselves, whether reviews are otherwise, aren’t bad. He knows how to review, and he knows what he needs to say in his articles general, he just isn’t a particularly great writer is all.
But this… how can someone who clearly doesn’t have the slightest clue how to put together a halfway decent review get allowed to write reviews on an actual website that is not just his own personal blog? Rather, I haven’t even seen someone who so obviously doesn’t even understand the fundamentals of reviewing posting reviews on a personal blog.
