Overlord Episode 3Overlord | Episode 3 | TFP Review

EmperorBrandon: Well, dang, that got rather brutal. Interesting to see how Momonga reacts to that brutality, and even thinking about that reaction to himself. Albedo views humans about what you would expect of demon. Going to be curious to see how stuff like that plays out.

While getting some background on his time with the game (looks like he wasn’t always so imposing, once saved by goofily-named justice-loving “Touch Me”. Haha), this one feels different from other trapped in an MMORPG stories. In SAO and Log Horizon, the protagonists made good use of how knowledgeable they were about the game in their new situation. In this case, it feels more like Momonga has to start from scratch. A number of things he experiences from the village expedition contradicts how things played out in the game for him.

bctaris: Very good point. It’s less “trapped in game'” or even “game world made real” and more “game player trapped in (fantasy-like) reality”. That is a slight twist on things. Like Log Horizon there are things–magic, items–that work similar enough to how they operate in game, but with sometimes surprising results. But fundamental “laws” of LH’s world (like geography, most importantly) still carried over. Here in Overlord those fundamentals seem completely different, and Momonga, though with powerful built-in advantages, is more like a brand new player again. That’s a development I didn’t really expect.

And between Shaltear and Albedo last episode, and the carnage here, it’s keeping its adult themes present and accounted for. Also didn’t really expect that.

Nice to get out into the country, and the light of day, as well, to let the animation stretch out.

General Hentai: Yeah, he’s changed and isn’t sure what to make of it. Last episode he even noted that his libido had been there briefly, but had since vanished. But he wants to get his name out, specifically, his guild’s name out, which would be recognized by other players who might’ve been swept into this world. But he’s definitely got a cold streak, deciding not to use his resurrection wand because it might bring him more trouble than its worth to him. This show remains interesting; it could go in a number of directions.

GingaDaiuchuu: So this could certainly become the story of a villain, specifically one who becomes one without ever being able to see that as a human would before his mind fully becomes that of a monster. It’s an interesting twist to the formula, and if it’s done well enough, I think it could add a very compelling component to an otherwise pretty dull template. So far it’s not being done so brilliantly, but it has its moments of promise.
