What They Say:
What has Illyana done to Nightcrawler, (and can we get the action figure)? Can Colossus really trust the Goblin Queen? Where did that weird little demon’s master go and what do they want with Boom Boom? Kindergarten Cable? Seriously? These questions and more will be answered in our hellacious third issue.
Content: (please note that content portions of a review may contain spoilers):
Inferno has been a special kind of craziness for me to watch as the first two issues unfolded and we got a feel for what’s going. Bringing back certain characters that I liked from my younger days and messing them over in fun ways has keep it very fast paced and fun as we get Piotr doing his best with his laser-like focus to rescue his sister. He’s become so obsessed about it that he’s not able to really see what’s going on anymore, which makes an already problematic situation even more so. Add in the time limit that he’s operating under and his team being whittled away and it’s easy to understand why he’s getting more and more frantic as the situation devolves.
With this installment, it’s more about setting up what’s to come than doing anything truly significant in a sense. It’s a matter of laying things on the table more and coming to the realization of just how screwed you are. So when Piotr finally makes his way through that door to save his sister only to discover that Maddy is there, it is pretty much maddening. But what makes it worse is discovering that his sister is so far gone as Darkchylde that she’s twisted Kurt to such a degree that he’s basically now a teleporting dragon. One that she’s taking further advantage of by going after the force field and what it is that the mutants have been protecting all this time. In the end, Piotr put things into play that has allowed her to make a truly big play for expanding on her lair. Providing she can survive it, which is something that Maddy’s not to sure she can do considering what Scott can throw at her.
While there’s some decent material on this side of events, and a little moment of Domino getting through to Piotr about really understanding his situation, we get a lot of fighting material going on with the mutant side. This brings a number of the players out as they deal with what’s coined as the bamf dragon, which is fun to watch until it gets very serious as they realize it’s not someone mimicking Kurt’s powers but is actually him. The general feeling of things is that we’re getting a real war thrown here with the number of people going at it and that’s just fun to watch across the spread, especially with Garron’s artwork that keeps it flowing well and provides some nice little twists and nudges on various designs for this particular world. That things go so badly in the battle that it looks like all hell is being opened into the world? Now that makes for a very fun looking event, especially if the man behind the scenes pulling the strings is actually pulling this one. So sinister…
In Summary:
Inferno moves along well here but it doesn’t have quite the same energy as the first two installments. A lot of what drives things here is the fun banter coming from Maddy as she enjoys her current position and predicament when it comes to both Piotr and Scott. Illyana doesn’t have a whole lot of time here but she’s put some big motions into play thanks to what Piotr’s done and it’s good to see someone capitalizing on things and taking advantage of it. The book does continue to be fun, but it’s setting up for what’s to come to draw it all together in a grand way. It’s more of a transitional installment for the most part, but one that certainly pleases if you enjoyed the first two.
