The extended 4th of July holiday weekend has come to a close and with a mix of activities and new movies, it’s one that’s certainly interesting to watch play out. While the numbers are to be further finalized, we expect that Inside Out will take the win overall once all is said and done based on the way Sunday reporting seems to be going. Still, for Universal, Jurassic World has done monster business with another $31 million weekend, bringing it to a domestic total of $558 million and a worldwide total of $1.38 billion since it came out. Inside Out is doing pretty good as well with a $30.1 million take this weekend, leaving the two films in content for who takes the top and second spots.
New films this week opened early, some with Tuesday night showings, so their totals are a bit skewed but not by much as nothing gained traction. Terminator: Genisys did a $29 million opening weekend and has a cume of $44 million so far. The film is doing better overseas as its opening in 47 territories so far has it with a $74 million take, bringing it to $129 million so far. Magic Mike XXL pretty much tanked with a $12 million weekend and $27 million overall since Tuesday showings. What’s interesting with Mike is that according to the tracking, it has an amazing 96% female audience, which is pretty much unheard of. It als has an A- from CinemaScore, so those that are seeing it (outside of critics) are loving it. The film has a small budget, just $15 million, so it’s one that will do well overall when all is said and done, but it’ll pale compared to the original.
Ted 2 is pretty much DOA.
Minions opens next weekend but it’s already started overseas where it’s land in 26 territories and brought in $54 million, setting up for a big opening here. We also have Self/Less opening next weekend but that’s not expected to be a big seller.
