Food Wars! | Episode 13 | TFP Review
EmperorBrandon: Isshiki’s dream about the gang coming back was hilarious, particularly seeing Megumi and her friends as stereotypical female delinquents. Also, Isshiki really likes going without clothing (or very limited clothing) whenever possible. Guess it should be no surprise that he sleeps in the nude.
Hehe, now Nikumi and Takumi are fighting over Souma. Nice to see they were worried about what was happening with that shokugeki.
GingaDaiuchuu: Now that I think about it, Nikumi and Takumi have similar blonde hair, tsundere rivalry with Soma, and names that differ only by the first kana (whether we’re using the former’s real name or not). I think they might’ve been made for each other. Although Isami has a little more meat on him for Nikumi to enjoy…
EmperorBrandon: So we got our next big challenge coming up with an item for the hotel breakfast menu, that needs to be successfully served to a mass of both regular customers and staff. Really like we’re continuing right ahead with Megumi’s character growth and showing her success in the face of the challenge. Most people we know are managing pretty well so far. Though this time we have a twist with Souma being the one in a more desperate situation.
Hitsugi Amachi: Yeah, though it’s also slightly anticlimactic because we already know there is a second season following, so this cannot be the end. But I guess they’re just trying to rev up our expectations for whatever ingenious little trick or idea he will eventually use to get out of the situation, though my guess is that it will largely hinge upon his talks with his father in the past.
EmperorBrandon: Curious to see how that goes, and what role our intimidating newcomers play in this. Part of that intimidation just being carefully crafted: liked that we got a silly scene with them there too. Also happy to see Erina seemingly more involved in this particular arc and getting to show some of what she’s so proud of.
bctaris: There’s something maybe more sinister and mysterious about this [new] character than previous ones (our first cheater, perhaps? did she make Soma sick or something?) but this is such a central strength to what makes this such a good show, and perhaps the most consistently good show of the Spring season: the way, as serious as it takes food, it does not take any of the formulas or tropes or stock characters seriously. It’s fully aware of itself–but never winking about it. Unlike a recent rash of shows, Food Wars‘ parody and farce is all to serve the entertainment and humor of the story, not to make some aching, existentialist point–which is, oddly, rare and refreshing. And so very much fun.
GingaDaiuchuu: So great to see everyone — especially Megumi — excelling at the latest challenge, while Soma is the one finally facing a real uphill struggle. I knew he couldn’t remain as flawless after that shokugeki, and it’s already very interesting.
Sensuiufu: I’m beginning to think Marui is almost eerily godlike. Not only does he survive the tests, he passes them while on his last breath. If it’s one character’s dishes I really want to see, it’s his.
Fun stuff like always. Curious to see what albino girl has up her sleeves though and whether she’ll be added to the love square
Hitsugi Amachi: Amazing that Isshiki bothers to wear a nightcap
