With the clones before her and the revelation that she’s one of them, Ouka starts to break down. Thanks to Teito’s kind words, though, she finds the strength to carry on. However, the pair soon find themselves under attack, first by the king, and then the creator of the clones, Dr. Nanase. The latter stabs the former, and yet to his surprise Ouka is able to resist him as she has broken free of the brainwashing. Rafael then emerges and strikes the man down before putting all the clones out of their misery.
Ea then appears, and reveals that he was actually Karr and has been watching over Teito. Furthermore, he tells Ouka that he placed the original princess’s soul into her body, which honestly feels like a bit of a cop-out as far as revelations go. It’s then that we’re finally treated to the king’s story, in which we learn how he was slowly led into madness by the Warmonger thanks to his unrequited love for Teito’s mother. It’s a dark yet somewhat touching tale that does a great job of taking the king from a faceless entity to a character with some depth.
Finally, we both learn about Landkarte’s past, as well as his identity in the present, and a bit of a twist regarding Ayanami as well. With the final players on the field, the story is now finally poised to march towards its conclusion!
In Summary
With this volume, we get an absolute avalanche of backstory and reveals. Fortunately, though, all those twists come about tastefully and feel earned rather than random. The flashbacks also add a lot of depth to characters that didn’t really have any previously, and are all quite enjoyable. It’s unfortunate that the author decided to sap a little of the bite from the twist from the end of last volume, but other than that there’s not much to complain about here. This is a great volume, and hopefully the rest of the series will be able to ride off of its momentum as it approaches the finale.
