Assassination Classroom Episode 17Buildup time

What They Say:
One day a weird tentacle creature destroys 70% of the moon and threatens to do the same to Earth in a year. However in exchange for being allowed to teach a group of misfit students called the E-Class, he’ll allow them to try and assassinate him. With the chance to earn 10 billion yen and prove their worth to the world, the kids are willing to give it a shot, but this thing might just end up being the best teacher they’ve ever had.

Content (warning as portions of this review may contain spoilers):
With the finals taken care of, it’s time for the island assassination…sort of. Once again we end up with something that functions more as build up rather than anything else, and feels a little disjointed because of it. Thankfully though, what it’s actively building up to is more than enough to salvage it.

So the first half of this episode is mostly spend preparing for the trip and it’s the part that feels the most jumbled as it almost feels like 2 mini episodes got shoved into the first 13 minutes or so. One of these features a gag about one of the students trying to lure Korosensei into a trap using porn mags. That goes as well as expected and doesn’t really serve much beyond a few laughs though it does offer a minor look at one of the other students named Kuruhashi and her love of insects. The more interesting one though is the kids training for the trip with Lovro who seems to have also caught onto Nagisa’s unusual talent for assassination.

It’s nice to see the show continuing to build on that angle since it’s a really good one for the series to explore and what’s really effective angle here is that  unlike the other teachers Lovro is much less apprehensive and willing to harness it. To that end  decides to teach Nagisa a special assassination technique and it should be interesting to see where that’s headed as far as Nagisa’s character goes. In that bit, we also learn about a legendary assassin called The Reaper who’s supposedly the best in the business so odds are it won’t be long before that character shows up, and it should make for some good material when they do.

Aside from that little bit though, the rest of the setup in this episode is a bit more straightforward. Everyone finally arrives at the island, and the kids start laying the groundwork for their big assassination attempt while pretending to play around. Although despite how much effort is going into it. Irina and Karasuma aren’t so sure it’ll go as well as the kids expect. Of course the actual attempt itself is being saved for next week so there’s not much to digest here aside from a fun little gag at the end that features Korosensei effectively screwing himself over. Should be fun to see how he gets out of this one and what exactly this one entails

In Summary:
Not a whole to the show this week as the focus is primarily on set up. There’s a few solid tidbits here and there that could make for some really great events going forward but for now the buildup here is more or less straightforward which makes the show a little less fun than usual. Hopefully the big payoff for next time is worth the obvious stalling
