What They Say
“Hold me, Issei.”

…Are you serious, President?!

Issei Hyoudou, recently brought back to life as a devil, works hard every day in pursuit of his ultimate goal–to become the “Harem King”! Meanwhile, a handsome aristocrat, Riser Phoenix, makes his entrance, claiming to be engaged to President Rias… Her reaction, though, is a surprise to all!

Now that Asia has been resurrected as a devil, Rias sets her up to live at Issei’s house. The interaction between them and Issei’s parents when asking for Asia’s permission to live with them is hilarious. Issei’s parents think he is a complete loser and they make no excuses for him. His mom even goes so far as to point out that Asia needs to be wary of her son and his nudie magazines in his closet.

While this begins a new interesting home life for Issei, the real magic happens when Rias shows up in his room one night all hot and bothered. Issei thinks he’s dreaming, but Rias’ advances are all too real and he might lose his virginity! At least, it was looking that way until Grayfia, the King of Hell’s head servant, shows up and puts a stop to their attempt at baby making.

The reason for Rias’ advances is an attempt on her part to nullify her arranged marriage to a devil from the Phoenix Clan. And it doesn’t take long for Riser Phoenix to show up demanding that Rias leave the human world and return to hell to prepare for their wedding. Rias refuses and Issei jumps in demanding that Riser apologize for his rudeness, but Riser is a badass. Not only that, but the guy has a harem with all his female servants, from his Queen down to his last pawn. It’s is pretty funny to see Issei squirm as he wrestles between his hatred for Riser and his utmost respect and envy of the guy’s harem.

As we would expect, the argument between Rias and her family and Riser ends up in agreement to battle for their futures. Rias and Riser will have a formal match and the winner gets what they want. Only problem for Rias is that Riser is practically undefeated and his servants are among the strongest of all Royal Devils.

Engage the training montage as Issei only has a week to get stronger in hopes of defeating Riser and saving his Rias’ chastity!

In Summary
The manga continues to speed along and this volume reminds me why I enjoyed the anime; fun characters and plenty of ecchi. High School DxD makes no attempt to mask its fanservice for the sake of fanservice; it just owns it. Issei has the potential to become a badass devil because he inherited the Sacred Gear of the Red Dragon, but he is a total perv and owns it. That makes for a fun protagonist; he’s a goofball obsessed with getting his own harem but he will probably come through for his friends when the chips are down.
