Fox is working its X-Men property pretty well these days with the Apocalypse film in the works as Bryan Singer’s last, and potential relaunch coming after that with an all new cast, as well as Hugh Jackman making The Wolverine sequel his last foray with the character. Add in the currently shooting Deadpool and the planned Gambit film and there’s plenty to like for fans of this particular set of characters.
One project that’s been bandied about for a bit is that of New Mutants, with plans for it close to surfacing last year around this time. Now Fox has set things in motion for it with The Fault in Our Stars director Josh Boone tapped to co-write and direct the film for the studio. it’s set as a standalone spinoff that will be connected in some way and could be the launching point for things after the current slate of films get solidified. The feature, which doesn’t have a date, will have Boone co-writing with Kante Gwaltnet while Simon Kinberg and Lauren Shuler Donner will produce.
Boone, for his part, is definitely considered a hot commodity as his film The Fault in Our Stars was made for $12 million and made $307 million worldwide. He’s been linked to multiple projects and his next one is The Vampire Chronicles for Universal.
Said Kinberg of the X-Men expansion with Boone: “We’re so excited to explore this new part of the X-Men universe, and so excited to do it with Josh, who is uniquely suited to tell this story about young characters.”
Original concept: Cannonball. Sunspot. Moonstar. Karma. Rahne. Teenagers, thrown together by the one thing they had in common — the X-Factor in their genes that made them different, made them mutants. Relive the adventures of the team that will come to be known as X-Force… if they survive.
