‘Akira’ Live Action Film Stalls Again

2 min read

AkiraAkira, welcome back to development hell.

While we learned last summer that writer Dante Harper was working with Warner Bros. and other producers to rewrite the script for the Akira movie, things look to have stalled once again on the project. This news comes from director Jaume Collet-Serra, who was attached to it previously and quite enthusiastically. He’s out doing press for his latest film, Run All Night, and he’s revealed that after doing two films back to back, he’s ready for a break and it works out because apparently things have stalled at Warner Bros. in regards to the project.

“A vacation! I truly will not make a decision on a movie for a few months because I’ve done these two movies in three years without any time off so I cannot wait for this movie to come out and just fade away. So my next movie’s not gonna be for a while, let’s put it this way.

This doesn’t mean that it’s a dead project, but we’ve seen this happen repeatedly over the years. The Akira film project has been up and down for several years now and even though it continues to go forward in small ways, it’s not moving into a formal production stage yet. As we said last year, it may also be finding itself being held back after the subpar performance of The Edge of Tomorrow as the studio may be a bit hesitant with another Japanese origin property when taken into considering with Pacific Rim as well.
