First ‘Supergirl’ Costume Images Arrive

2 min read

SupergirlWith the pilot filming for Supergirl right now for CBS, the smart move of releasing some of the costume design aspects for it has happened and that means we get our first look at Melissa Benoist as the title character. The costume was done by Colleen ATwood, who has worked with Berlanti’s people before on Arrow and Flash. She’s no stranger to costume design in general, having won Academy Awards for her work in Alice in WonderlandMemoirs of a Geisha and Chicago as well as garnered an additional eight nominations for other films. The combination of the talent there and the experience of superhero costume design for TV, which has its own constraints, makes her a smart choice here even if it may be going a bit darker than some might expect.

“In designing Supergirl, I wanted to embrace the past, but more importantly, thrust her into the street-style action hero of today,” Atwood said.

The pilot is being written by Greg Berlanti and Ali Adler. Berlanti has been responsible for both Arrow and The Flash on The CW. CBS has picked up the show to series already for the fall 2015 season. It stars Melissa Benoist as Kara, Mehcad Brooks Brooks, Davide Harewood as Hank Henshaw, Chyler Leigh as Alexandra Danvers, Laura Nenanti as Alura Zor-El and Calista Flockhart as Cat Grant. Dean Cain and Helen Slater are guest starring in the pilot.

Plot concept: The series centers on Kara Zor-El (Benoist). Born on the planet Krypton, Kara Zor-El escaped amid its destruction years ago. Since arriving on Earth, she’s been hiding the powers she shares with her famous cousin, Superman. But now at age 24, she decides to embrace her superhuman abilities and be the hero she was always meant to be.
