While their record is hit or miss, as is pretty much any site that works with a lot of rumors but also the always changing nature behind the scenes of films going into production, Latino Review has what they claim to be a look at how the new Spider-Man series of films are going to work out now that Marvel Studios is working with Sony Pictures as a part of it. The piece goes into some of the behind the scenes shenanigans in regards to power plays among various people, from Avi Arad and Amy Pascal, but that’s neither here nor there for most fans when you get down to the actual production of the film and the intent behind it.
According to the report, the new film, which may be called Spectacular Spider-Man after one of the many comics series over the years, will have:
- No new origin story, Spidey exists from the beginning, taken as a given
- New actor, probably an unknown, he will be specifically based in High School and they want him to be able to grow up into the role. The thought being if this works, Spidey can do multiple trilogies for years ala Harry Potter.
- A major part of the first film will involve Spider- Man fighting Iron Man and then trying to pass the “audition” to join the Avengers
- The first film will involved the Sinister Six coming together with the thought to later maybe spin them off.
One of the bigger reveals that I think is a big positive is that Drew Goddard, who worked on the initial scripts for the Daredevil series, is being slotted to write and direct this film. Goddard left the Daredevil project to go work on a Sinister Six movie for Sony that was going to feature a group of villains. But now things are going to put him in the drivers seat of the new trilogy, albeit one that as we see may avoid doing the origin story, or at least just keep it to the opening credits since I can’t imagine them not wanting to put their stamp on it at least a little bit.
This also comes on the news from Robert Downey. Jr. last week to expect big news from him this week. An outing in a Spider-Man film that follows up his participation in Captain America: Civil War certainly sounds like the best of both worlds for fans and the studios, as they get the characters mingling in a big way and fans get to see Tony Stark and another potential science bro, albeit in high school.
