One of the fun things with Hollywood is that while there’s usually a decent lockdown of information on projects in the works, once people are out on the press junket circuit, stuff comes out. Take Will Smith and Margot Robbie for example, as they’re doing press for their film Focus that’s out at the end of this month. Both are also toplining in the upcoming Suicide Squad film and naturally questions get asked there – such as the difficulty in getting someone to play the Rick Flagg character:

“We’ve still got to get it right,” Smith said. Robbie meanwhile, added: “This happens all the time. People act like, ‘Oh my god, the movie must be ending!’ It’s just the deal with movies.” Not to mention “a lot of the characters haven’t been portrayed before so it’s a pretty big undertaking. And it’s a big undertaking for the people who are going to play the characters who have been played, like the Joker. It’s big shoes to fill.”

Part of the problem, as close watchers will know, is that when you get to late December and through a chunk of January, a lot of Hollywood shuts down due to the holiday and then the ongoing slate of awards programs. Which is why, according to Smith, David Ayer “turned the screenplay in before Christmas. What happens is Hollywood shuts down. But he was still working and he wanted to (start shooting) April 13th. So it takes a couple weeks to gear back up at the top of the year and people have taken (other) movies. He’s moving really quickly.”

The pair were also asked about what kind of training they’re doing to prepare for the film:

“Oh god yes,” said Smith. “I started before Christmas. No carbs on Christmas! It was terrible.”

As for Robbie, “Oh, I ate everything on Christmas. I’m not strong though. To do all your own stunts you have to be so strong.”

Announced for an August 5th, 2016 released, Suicide Squad is being helmed by Fury director David Ayer. The film is set to star Jared Leto as The Joker, Will Smith as Deadshot, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, someone as Rick Flagg, Jai Courtney as Boomerang, Cara Delevingne as Enchantress and Viola Davis as Amanda Waller.

Plot concept: A group of supervillains are brought together to tackle high-risk black ops missions for the government.
