Anime Snapshots Roundup For Week Of January 23rd, 2015

5 min read

Welcome to another Week in Anime. Never let it be said I never pay attention to feedback – after being prompted to take another look at Log Horizon S2, I spent this week catching up. Now call me shallow, but I have to admit that the constant teasing that Tetra’s been giving Naotsugu has been one of the more laugh-inducing things this season.

I was going to comment along the lines of “what’s not to like?”, until I realised…

Ohgoddamit. Moe magical girl illusions: shattered. I have to say, though, being The Guy Who Usually Plays a Girl in videogames, I like that they’ve got that in here. Now if the show could also move past…

…giant condom monsters, we might be onto something. With the catch-up series done, time to move on to current shows, starting with this week’s newcomer, Isuca.

Uh-oh. Censor Bars of Doom within the first few seconds. Never a good sign. But wait, could the show be about to redeem itself? Could it have been named Isunyaa instead!?

After all, everyone loves a catgirl. But no. This is, without doubt, the worst show I’ve been in quite some time – cardboard characters, an idea that’s been done to death, ‘fighting’ whose main aim seems to be to get the lead girl out of her clothes (Master of Martial Hearts-style, just with smaller boobies), and the final, ultimate insult:

BAD GRAMMAR. Even if that’s the subtitler’s fault, I’m still holding that against it. Dropped, faster than a great big droppy thing. Three other shows added to the droplist this week: Cute High School Defence Club LOVE! being the first. Not so much for being a bad show – there’s a certain appeal to the very twisted, self-aware view it’s taking of the magical person genre, but there are some limits, crossing which is kinda TMI.

Well, I suppose working in a bathhouse is the perfect place for anyone so inclined.

Now there’s a D. As in Deposit Statement for his bank account, but positioning is everything. The next show for the drop this week came from the Absolutely Infinite World Break trio, which are kinda hard to tell apart sometimes.

Remind me again, who was promising to protect who last week? Because I think he’s kinda delusional about who’s the strongest here.

Just naming his fist, fortunately. In these shows, you can never be sure.

This “slipped, fell, landed…” business is going to become a weekly gag, isn’t it..? ::facepalm::

See, this scene starts so well. There’s a kinda “I’ve less than a day to live, likely, so let me enjoy myself, okay?” vibe which I actually thought was quite touching. Until…

…gratuitous fanservice manages to spoil the mood once again.

That’s a very good question.

I dunno. Bondage probably counts as illicit. That said, taping up Ranjou’s mouth at least silences her paint-stripping, glass-breaking voice, and brings a few moments of bliss. And for that reason at least (and because it’s the worst of a bad trio), World Break goes on the droplist. Joining the others, we have Testament of Sister New Devil, for Going Way Too Far:

I know a Depeche Mode song about that.

Dialogue lines that should only appear in hentai. And they didn’t just play with the idea…

…they played with Mio quite extensively, too. Yes, that ::facepalm:: is a true audience insert moment. Moving on to shows that we’re staying with for now, it’s time for Happinesscharge Precure, where this season’s Big Bad is kinda upset about things that everyone has to deal with.

No shit. Your point?

Best Cures. Since Smile, anyway.

So last week, Lovely was facing a villain who was all upset that his amorous advances on her had been rejected. This week, Lovely’s facing another villain who’s expecting her to just give in and love poor him. Hmmm.

Well, she is at that. Moving from things fluffy and feminine to angular and masculine, it’s time for Jojo

…or am I watching Future Diary? Either way, this week’s notable for the Stand users being even more stupid than the good guys. I didn’t think that was even possible. Going back in time, to Maria the Virgin Witch

…it seems that there are some men that a succubus just can’t tempt. I guess her jaws get a reprieve this week. If there’s one common theme running amongst the majority of this season’s shows, though…

…it’s that they’ve lost all pretence at subtlety when it comes to sex. If this column has seemed rather sex-obsessed the past few weeks, that’s why – I can only work with what Japan’s giving me here. Not my fault, guv’nor. Two episodes of Saekano this week (one of the shows I was running behind on last week), and I have to admit, it’s beating my admittedly rock-bottom expectations.

You’ve no idea how important such things can be. Although I suspect his is far less sarcastic than mine.

Oh, let me count the ways. Or whys.

I approve of his model collection.

Kato spots where her future is going if she’s molded into moe. Smart girl.

But I thought he didn’t like 3D!? Traitor to the otaku cause! Finally this week, Yuri Kuma Arashi:

One, that’s a very strange definition of evil they’ve got going there, and two, get your foreshadowing here. We’ll find out if I’m right next week. Until then, see you…
