Playing out just as publicly as these things do with the Marvel Studios films, the Suicide Squad film has continued to hit its snags with some of its casting. Originally, Tom Hardy was on board to play the role of Rick Flagg, but for various reasons including screentime as his star continues to rise, he dropped out of the project. Things then shifted to Warner Bros. beginning to court Jake Gyllenhaal for the role, as he was just in Nightcrawler and has the availability for it. But now it appears that he’s passed on the project, likely for similar reasons. With him leading films himself, an ensemble cast like this with a variety of big names attached to it makes screen time a premium, especially if the rumors are true that it will have a stronger focus on the Deadshot and Joker characters.

Suffice to say, someone will step into the role at some point since as filming is set to begin in April.

Announced for an August 5th, 2016 released, Suicide Squad is being helmed by Fury director David Ayer. The film is set to star Jared Leto as The Joker, Will Smith as Deadshot, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, someone as Rick Flagg, Jai Courtney as Boomerang, Cara Delevingne as Enchantress and Viola Davis as Amanda Waller.

Plot concept: A group of supervillains are brought together to tackle high-risk black ops missions for the government.
