Star Wars Thursday: Festival of Lights Edition

2 min read

Star Wars Festival 1Welcome back to Star Wars Thursday, a celebration of the wonderful and often wacky world of a galaxy far, far away.

Hanukkah, the Festival of Lights, is in full swing. Since my last few posts have focused on Christmas traditions, I thought it would be only fair to find out how this holiday could be transformed by the Star Wars fandom.

Twenty years ago, Adam Sandler brought out his first version of “The Chanukah Song”, and shared that Harrison Ford is a quarter Jewish. Later versions mentioned other prominent Star Wars actors who are also Jewish. Here, I bring to you a parody of his song that is entirely Star Wars based.

There are Hanukkah ugly sweaters, but I think I like this t-shirt better. What fan wouldn’t love to celebrate Star Wars along with this lovely winter holiday?

Speaking of menorahs, I couldn’t believe how many amazing and/or silly Star Wars versions of the traditional light display I found online. I was disappointed to not find anything on Etsy, thought. Etsy never fails me!

Here’s a simple set of directions for making your own menorah using Legos, glow sticks, and Star Wars minifigs. Since it is completely DIY, you can plop your favorite characters or vehicles into the mix. I think I’d have a few more original trilogy figs in mine!

This next article also gives directions for a DIY menorah, and states that “PEZ Hanukkah menorahs have been a thing for awhile”. According to this writer, PEZ candy is also kosher. I give extra kudos to the author for wishing the box of dispensers had at least one woman from Star Wars to include in the menorah. I heartily agree!

This one could also be recreated in your very own home, but I’m not sure I can condone the amount of glue it would take to get these parts to stick together. I’m not a “mint in box” gal, but superglue on my action figures could be considered an act aggression worthy of descent to the Dark Side. Your mileage may vary.

I used the printout of the Droidel as a holiday present for my students a few years back. The actual directions used to be hosted on the Star Wars blog. This year, @Bonniegrrl tweeted out a link to the file you can download and print at home.

Happy Hanukkah to all!

Until next week – may the Force of holiday cheer be with you.
