Sony Looking For Quality Return With ‘Spider-Man’ Films

2 min read

Captain America Iron Man Spider-ManThere’s been a lot of chatter about the hack into Sony Pictures that has revealed a lot of the inner workings and I’ve been really disinterested in dealing with it much because so much of it really lacks context – and it was all private information anyway. That said, the rumors that we had earlier in the fall of Sony wanting to work with Marvel Studios as a partner to help improve the quality of their Spider-Man films was proven true, though things apparently fell through awhile ago. But now new tidbits have surfaced that indicates that Sony Japan is wanting to follow through on it more.

“Sony Japan thinks the Marvel deal for Spider-Man is still on the table and they want to renegotiate as a return to quality, the 60/40 split is can be negotiated and Sony Entertainment’s October hard-line stance of wanting creative control is now mostly moot in the eyes of the higher-ups.”

While Amazing Spider-Man 2 was the weakest performing of the five films, it was one that really helped Sony’s bottom line this year and was one of their financial positives. There’s been talk for some time about trying to get the character in through the Captain America: Civil War film and that may still be possible, though I’m still keen in general on seeing Marvel take more creative control of the property while working with Sony because Marvel Studios/Disney can realistically put out only so many films themselves at a time considering all that’s really involved.

If this does bear out, I’m also hopeful that they retain Andrew Garfield for the lead actor as he’s really been excellent at bringing a more classic personification of the character out and I’m just glad to have had the Gwen Stacey arc covered as well. But also important is just how great of an ambassador Garfield and Emma Stone have been in promoting the films by connecting with younger audiences in a huge way – both during the premieres but also throughout the entire process and long after the film has come out.

  1. I really hope this comes to fruition. Allow Spider Man back into the Marvel universe so he can get in on cameos in the other films and possibly join in on the Infinity Wars or as early as the Civil War. Also, with Marvel doing more creative work on the Spider Man films, I think the quality could definitely go up.
