Warren Ellis Talks ‘Global Frequency’ Acquisition

2 min read

Global Frequency CoverAnnounced last week that DC Entertainment is working with Jerry Bruckheimer to bring another comic adaptation to Fox, original writer Warren Ellis has opined on the second life of Global Frequency. The pilot order is based on the twelve issue series, which was created by Warren Ellis for the Vertigo Comics imprint. The TV series adaptation is going to be penned by Rockne S. O’Bannon, who is well known for his work on Farscape as well as the more recent Defiance. The project is coming out of producer Jerry Bruckheimer with Jonathan Littman, Warren Ellis and O’Bannon serving as executive producers as well for with Warner Bros. TV.

“My graphic novel ‘Global Frequency’ is set to be adapted for television again,” wrote Ellis. “DC Entertainment bought the option and took it to Jerry Bruckheimer’s house, where I’ve always had friends. Rockne S. O’Bannon is writing the adaptation for KristiAnn Reed and Jonathan Littman at Bruckheimer — you may know him from FARSCAPE. The pilot has a production commitment at the Fox network, which means that FOX have to shoot a pilot or pay a financial penalty. To Bruckheimer, sadly, not to me.”

“I had a long conversation with Rockne the other week, and have spoken to Geoff Johns, who I suspect was behind the whole caper, a few times during the process,” Ellis wrote. “People have knee-jerk issues with Fox, but my dealings with them have always been decent and direct. One day I’ll be able to tell you the full story of ‘Global Frequency’s’ many lives in television over the years. Anyway. That’s a thing that happened! I am told that I will likely have more tv-related news after the American Thanksgiving period.”

This is the second time that the property has been attempted as it was developed back in 2005 with Michelle Forbes and Josh Hopkins leading it, but it didn’t go to series.

Comic concept: Global Frequency is a worldwide rescue organization that offers the last shred of hope when all other options have failed. Manned by 1001 operatives, the Frequency is made up of experts in fields as diverse as bio-weapon engineering and Le Parkour Running. Each agent-equipped with a special mobile vid-phone-is speciffically chosen by Miranda Zero, enigmatic leader of the Global Frequency, based on proximity, expertise, and, in some cases, sheer desperation!
