The Review:
Content (warning as portions of this review may contain spoilers):
Last week’s episode was a scheduled recap, and while that thankfully hasn’t done anything to affect the show’s production values in anyway, putting it right in the middle of a two parter felt in poor taste. Thankfully it didn’t do too much to kill the momentum as the series goes right back into the full swing of things and in a big way. It’s hard to say whether or not it was completely worth the extra wait but there’s definitely a lot of fun to be had.
Kicking off from where things had actually ended before, Azazel and his demon army have arrived to invade the capital and obtain the God Key from Amira. As battles take up a majority of what goes on this week, the show gets to show off it’s budget in full glory and it’s quite a spectacle as there’s some really cool looking stuff in the mix. Where the real interest lies however is the battle with Azazel himself as it brings some pretty good character material and Masakazu Morita’s performance as him, hams up his villany for all it’s worth.
The true nature of Favarro’s character was a question that was raised last week and this episode gives a somewhat clearer picture of that. Azazel gives an over the top confession as to his involvement with the deaths of Kaisar and Favarro’s dads, and apparently orchestrated the whole fiaso for his own amusement. Since Favarro actually remembers him, he assumes that the real reason Favarro’s taken responsibility for Kaisar’s dad was to give him a reason to go on and that Favarro wants revenge as much as Kaisar. It’s pretty clear that despite him speaking to the contrary about Kaisar that he does care a lot more than he lets on and that part of it’s most likely true. However he also makes it clear that at the end of the day he lives for himself and couldn’t care less about getting vengeance.
This ends up having a pretty profound effect on Kaisar too once he finally gets the whole truth as well. Though he doesn’t come out and say it, he’s more or less decided to forgive Favarro in his own way as he comes to his rescue and they team up to take down Azazel. It’s hard to say if the two will ever really go back to being best buds at this point, but having them genuinely team up for once makes for some good stuff and it’s definitely entertaining. Jeanne actually ends up being the one to finish Azazel off but it’s really Kaisar’s victory as he finally moves past his desire for revenge, and manages to avoid sacrificing himself to do it, which would have been in poor taste at this point
Sadly since most of the focus is on those two, Rita and Amara end up getting shafted a bit this time around in terms of screentime which sucks a bit. Amira also bounces back a bit too quickly after her fight with Favarro previously, which feels a little jarring given how big of a deal it seemed to be. Although at this point it’s been pretty much established that she thinks like a k little kid and so meeting up with her dad was apparently enough to put her back in a good mood which feels believable enough to give it a pass. She ends up meeting with her dad again after the battle’s over and he’s officially confirmed to be Jeanne’s right hand man, Lavalley which raises some questions that should hopefully get answered next week.
In Summary:
Bahamut is back and in full steam as it delievers on another fantastic episode. It was good to get some serious development for Favarro and Kaisar, and it should be fun to see if anything changes for them after all this. Amara and Rita didn’t get as much time to shine as everyone else, but with luck next week should deliver on something more for the former.
