6 min read

Senran KaguraBoobs are what fuel interest in this sexy saga of seductive shinobi.

What They Say:
From the Dynamic Duo that brought you Ikki Tousen comes a revealing tale of naughty ninjas sucking down sushi rolls and busting up the competition!

Asuka and her friends may look like any other girls at Hanzo Academy, but they’re secretly studying the ancient art of Ninjutsu! While other students do their homework, Asuka and the gang push their beautiful bodies to the breaking point in pursuit of their perfect form. Life is one sexy sparring session after another until a Deviously Demented rival clan of evil ninjas ambushes the Hanzo hotties – and steals their sacred ninja scroll. Faced with their toughest – and most well-rounded – enemies ever, Asuka and her fellow Deadly Divas will have to go further than they’ve ever gone before to prove they’ve mastered the art of full frontal combat!

Whether you like blondes or brunettes; good or evil; big or EXTRA BIG; this series based on the action packed video game proves once and for all that a ninja beat down is the most exhilarating beat down of all!

The Review:
Audio:
Senran Kagura Ninja Flash offers two audio options, an English dub track and the original Japanese language track. Tracks can be switched on the fly by calling up the disc’s pop up menu. Subtitles are automatically activated when the Japanese language track is selected. Sadly, there are no subtitle options for the English voice track.

Video:
The video quality for the Blu-Ray and DVD editions are pretty clean. Video hounds will likely flock to the Blu-Ray edition of the series for its higher resolution and bright, vivid colors.

Packaging:
Much like other FUNimation hybrid releases, the box comes with two copies of the 12 episode series, one for Blu-Ray and another for DVD. Both cases come with two discs and different cover artwork featuring glamour shots of noteworthy characters.

Menu:
There’s nothing particularly exciting about the disc menus for Senran Kagura. With a small number of items to click through, the presentation is designed to steer you straight into the action with minimal fuss. In a cheeky move befitting the series’ sexy tone, the act of navigating the pop up menu are accompanied by by a woman’s brief, suggestive moans.

Extras:
If episode commentaries are your thing, you’ll find them here but only for episodes 4 and 10. Beyond that, the box set offers textless opening and closing title songs, trailers for other FUNimation releases, and Japanese commercials for the show – typical FUNimation collection of bonus content.

Content: (please note that content portions of a review may contain spoilers)
One doesn’t come to Senran Kagura for compelling drama, the rich interplay among characters, or impressive fight sequences. For a show based on a game whose combat mechanics earned notoriety for its gratuitous sexiness, boobs are what fuel interest in this sexy saga of seductive shinobi. Lots of boobs. Big boobs, medium boobs, the occasional panty shot, but mostly the boobs. The entire cast of Senran Kagura Ninja Flash are modeled after their digital counterparts, designed to be as sexy and cute as they struggle to keep their bustlines from exploding out from under their tight tops. The show makes no attempt to hide or shy away from its sexy content. In fact, it works very hard to keep the girl’s boobs the center of attention as much as possible. Little excuse is needed to put them in a variety of poses that offer unhindered views of the goods. Even the act of eating sushi rolls is made erotic. Senran Kagura has a story, but let’s be serious. That’s not what you’re here for.

In the world of Senran Kagura Ninja Flash, there exists two ninja schools. The Hanzo Academy is home to Asuka, the granddaughter of a famous shinobi, and her friends. Each girl has their own unique personalities that would endear them to those who favor certain characteristics. Asuka is a friendly girl who tries very hard to live up to her family’s legacy but often stumbles along the way. She believes that there is good in everyone, which makes her a bit naive. Katsuragi is a busty blonde tomboy who delights in molesting the other girls, especially Asuka, at every opportunity. The raven haired Ikaruga is the group’s class representative whose sense of honor and duty make her a natural born leader. Rounding out the group is the Yagyu and Hibari, an inseparable pair of first year students .Yagyu, a stoic young girl with a no nonsense attitude, has taken the role of a big sister to the clumsy and super innocent Hibari. Together, the girls of Hanzo academy spend their days studying to become masters of the ninja arts so that they may keep the peace and maintain order.

The Hanzo girls are antagonized by the students of the Hebijo school, a rival ninja academy that is the Sith to the Jedi-like Hanzo. Taught to use their skills for evil and profit, Hebijo has targeted Hanzo because their master believes the school holds one part of a magical ninja scroll that, when complete, will yield untold power. The Hebijo girls act as foils to the Hanzo, with the evil Homura leading the pack of lady ninjas eager to put their nefarious abilities to the test.

The conflict between the two schools serves as the driving force of the twelve episode series. In between training sessions and ninja missions, the Hanzo girls must contend with the Hejibo school’s aggressive attacks. Battles occur within magical combat realms, called Kekai Barriers, that allow the combatants to go all out against each other without fear of extensive property damage. To maximize their combat effectiveness, the girls transform (because why not?) into special outfits that reflect their combat style. While the girls are shown to suffer combat wounds, the true measure of success is the tearing of clothes. Battle damage is depicted by ever shrinking amounts of clothing that expose impractical underwear. Fights typically end when a combatant has lost their bra, leaving them exposed, vulnerable, and open to the viewer’s lasicvious gaze. This is usually the outcome of every fight and as a result, fight scenes are often bland and repetitive. I grew to favor the moments where the girls were either training or just palling around, as the group dynamic is much more fun during their off time.

Senran Kagura Ninja Flash is to be commended for not shying away from what makes the franchise so infamous. It goes out of its way to be as sexy as possible and doesn’t skimp on the skin. Speaking as a reviewer of hentai for this site and an admirer of ample chest sizes, this series should be right up my alley. While I can appreciate the amount of flesh on display, Senran Kagura’s biggest flaw is that the whole thing feels too easy. There’s nothing particularly clever or interesting about the show; nothing to make it interesting and engaging beyond obvious reasons. The story lacks character, heart and charm. If you were to strip away the outrageous boob physics and sexy poses, all that’s left is a generic martial arts action comedy. I will give Senran Kagura some credit for its depiction of the female protagonists. Although they exist to be sex objects (and often the targets of naughty dojinshi), they are strong and independent women. They don’t need men in their lives to make them happy or guide them down some path to deeper personal meaning.

In Summary:
Senran Kagura Ninja Flash is perfect “guilty pleasure” material. It is not for everyone and its sexiness lies within the eye of the beholder. Fans of cute girls with big chests will no doubt enjoy the show’s glimpse of paradise. Others, especially those with a fondness for subtlety and significance to their titallation, may see Senran Kagura as nothing more than a cheap thrill.
