‘World Of Warcraft’ Film Finalizes Cast, Reveals Concept & Character Elements

2 min read

Warcraft Header LogoDuncan Jones certainly earned a lot of credit with his first film, Moon, but he’s not been able to go really big after that to capture audiences. That may change come early 2016 with the first feature film adaptation of the World of Warcraft franchise. Distributed by Universal Pictures, there’s a hope that it can capture some of the interest that the Lord of the Rings films generated with the fantasy element, something that’s very little used in films overall. At the BlizzCon event this weekend, the finalized cast list was revealed with some of the very basic casting bits along with a look at some character imagery and other designs. Most of the cast listings are just them in their street clothes though as only Dominic Cooper as King Llane Wrynn gets to be seen in full gear.

The Alliance

  • Travis Fimmel as Anduin Lothar, the lead protagonist for the Alliance. Lothar is a war hero who has sacrificed everything to keep the people of Azeroth safe.
  • Dominic Cooper as King Llane Wrynn, the leader of the human kingdom of Stormwind and a beacon of hope to its people in a time of darkness.
  • Ben Foster as Medivh, known as “The Guardian,” a mysterious and reclusive protector who wields formidable magical power.
  • Ben Schnetzer as Khadgar, a gifted young mage, embarking on a daring search for the truth during his apprenticeship with Medivh.
  • Ruth Negga as Lady Taria, the royal Queen of Stormwind, King Llane’s great love and most trusted counsel.
  • Paula Patton as Garona, a strong-willed survivor caught between the Alliance and the Horde, who must decide where her true loyalty lies.

The Horde

  • Toby Kebbell as Durotan, the lead protagonist for the Horde. Durotan is the noble Chieftain of the Frostwolf Clan, battling to save his people and his family from extinction.
  • Rob Kazinsky as Orgrim Doomhammer, Blackhand’s right hand and a brave warrior destined to wield the Doomhammer: a weapon of orc legend.
  • Clancy Brown as Blackhand, known as “The Destroyer,” one of orc-kind’s most fearsome and titanic warchiefs.
  • Daniel Wu as Gul’dan, a supreme orc ruler, fueled by a dark magic that even he cannot control.

Other Cast

  • Burkely Duffield
  • Daniel Cudmore
  • Callum Keith Rennie

The film is set for a March 11th, 2016 release.

Plot concept: The film portrays the origin story of the initial encounters between the humans and the orcs, with an emphasis upon both the Alliance’s and the Horde’s sides of their conflict. Featuring characters such as Durotan and Lothar, the film will take place in a variety of locations established in the video game series.
