The upcoming anime adaptation of Magic Kaito got the news recently that A-1 Pictures was handling the animation side of it and now some new details have arrived regarding the show. The show has had some cast announcements by revealing in Weekly Shonen Sunday that Kappei Yamaguchi will be playing the title role, which is doubly amusing since he also plays the role of Shin’ichi Kudo in Detective Conan. Additionally, M.A.O. will be playing Aoko Nakamoriwhile Eri Kitamura will play Akako Koizumi. Mamoru Miyano has signed on for Saguru Hakuba as well.

The series comes from original manga creator Gosho Aoyoma and was a project he was working on before Detective Conan became a huge hit for him. The series is set for an October 2014 debut where new episodes will be broadcast in the time slot before Detective Conan, essentially making it Aoyoma Hour.

While he’s gone back to it at times over the years to work on the manga, there’s not a lot of material considering it began back in 1987. What has been done over the last few years though is that during breaks on the Detective Conan anime series is to do some Magic Kaito specials, which now number twelve and have been pulled together to a limited Blu-ray box set that will be limited and numbered to 1412 pieces, which ties into the series itself. The set is scheduled for a September 26th, 2014 release for – you guessed it – 14,120 yen.

Plot concept: Kaito Kuroba, a normal teenage student whose father is often absent for vaguely defined reasons. When his father dies under mysterious circumstances, he is made aware of his father’s secret identity; a famous international criminal known as International Criminal 1412: the Phantom Thief, and that he was murdered by a mysterious organization for refusing to aid them in retrieving the “Pandora Gem”; a mystical stone said to shed a “tear” during the passing of a particular comet, the consumption of which bestows immortality. He vows to prevent the organization from gaining immortality, and assumes his father’s identity as he begins his quest for the gem. His only clues as to the gem’s location are that it glows red under the full moon and that it is a doublet: a gem hidden within a larger gem. Thus, it would have to be a relatively large one with a bizarre history, and always stored in a place that never receives moonlight. He thus researches and steals famous priceless gems with odd histories from incredibly well-defended areas, and always returns them after the very next full moon.
