The differences in releases from digital to print is endlessly interesting and can show some surprising trends, one of which as we learned from Viz Media recently is that their release of Deadman Wonderland has been a surprise hit in both formats. The publisher has pulled together their list of the top ten digital selling books of theirs for the week ending July 29th, 2014 and it’s another interesting week. While we’ve had bookstore shrinkage for years and there’s signs of some growth again in-stores for manga, there’s only so much that can be on a shelf. And digital editions are becoming the go-to place to get caught up on older series, especially when there are sales. This week sees the 2007 print release of Chibi Vampire taking the top spot – a volume that is largely out of print and hard to get from retailers. But it saw its digital debut on July 29th and surged to the top of the list.
As big of a fan as print as I am, the writing is getting clearer for many people. Digital is where there is going to continue to be real growth and potential for publishers to mine and continually sell their catalog of titles that is hard to get traction for in print.
