One of the more important things to happen when a film is coming together, especially with a project like Marvel works, is that the director and writer can work to get a good product out of both of their sense of style and presentation as well as what Marvel wants for building its cohesive film universe, something that is still blazing its own trail. With director Scott Derrickson talking positively about Jonathan Spaights before, the question was asked of him recently while out doing press for Deliver Us From Evil if he was going to do less writing himself and focus more on directing, which lead him to talking about Doctor Strange a bit.

“Not necessarily,” he answered. “Obviously it’s been announced there’s a writer on Doctor Strange but in that situation it’s maybe my favorite screenwriter in town. I’d read four of his scripts before ever meeting him. I think that the opportunity to work with great talent and people who can supersede my abilities in various areas is extremely exciting to me. Like, Jon Spaihts is a genius.”

Originally Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer wrote the first script for it to fit into what Marvel wants and it’s expected that another draft of it under Spaights for cleanup and tweaking, along with Derrickson as well. We’re expecting to hear a little more about the project as a whole come Comic-Con with possibly a date and even some casting.

The planned Doctor Strange movie for the Marvel Cinematic Universe is moving forward nicely as a part of Phase Three, which has it coming after next year’s Avengers 2 and Ant-Man, with an expected late 2016 date based on Captain America 3 having an early 2016 date. Scott Derrickson has taken on the directors chair position with talks there being finalized. Derrickson has some interesting credits to his name, kicking off back in 2005 with The Exorcsim of Emily Rose before being sucked into a big picture with The Day the Earth Stood Still. That experience pushed him back to the smaller films where he worked on Sinister and has Deliver Us from Evil out in July, which is certainly freaking people out from its trailers. It looks like it could be a good fit, considering the mystical nature of what the Doctor Strange character represents, so we’re hopeful.
