As the summer season moves into full gear, more of the home video announcements roll in. The latest is for Tokyo ESP, which is getting a six volume release for the twelve episodes it runs, breaking it down to a standard two episode per disc routine. The series is getting a limited edition only Blu-ray release priced at 7,600 yen each while the DVD side gets the limited edition and regular editions, priced at 6,600 yen and 5,600 yen respectively. The series is set to begin release on September 26, 2014 and end on February 27th, 2015.
The first volume has a good mix of things being included as it’s getting a specially designed cover, a 12 page visual book, a soundtrack CD and more. On disc extras include the TV commercials and the clean opening and closing sequences.
The series is based on the manga of the same name that comes from Hajime Segawa which began back in 2010 and has eight volumes running so far. The anime adaptation is setup at Xebec with Shighito Takayanagi directing based on scripts by Hideyuki Kurata and Yasuko Kamo while Mitsuru Ishihara will be handling the character designs along with Masaaki Takiyama, who is also serving as the chief animation director. The original creator, Segawa, also was behind a previously licensed series in North America with Ga Rei Zero.
Plot concept: The science fantasy story Tokyo ESP begins with Rinka, an extremely poor high school girl who lives with just her father in modern Tokyo. One day, she is going home from school when she chases a “flying penguin” to the top of New Tokyo Tower—only to have “fish swimming in the air” suddenly appear before her. One of the fish goes through Rinka and gives her extraordinary powers beyond those of normal humans, particularly the ability to slip through solid objects.
