It doesn’t happen often, but sometimes we do see some slivers of progress in the Japanese home video release market. Such is the case with Tokyo Ghoul, the new 12 episode summer 2014 anime series. While most series of this nature get a six volume release – and sometimes a seven volume release with a bonus episode – this one is getting a four volume release beginning on September 26th, 2014 and running through December 26th, 2014. And while the prices are a touch higher, it’s not significantly so compared to a lot of 2 episode releases we see, especially since they’re listed as limited edition releases. The Blu-ray releases are priced at 8,800 yen each while the DVDs are slotted at 7,800 yen each. The first volume has a few details to it so far in that the LE will come with a CD as well as a small booklet while on disc extras include an audio commentary, some form of bonus anime (likely a short) and the usual array of TV spots and promotional videos.
The show is being directed by Shuhei Morita based on the scripts by Chuji Mikasano at studio Pierrot. Kazuhiro Miwa is working as the character designer for it. The Japanese Voice Cast includes Natsuki Hanae as Ken Kaneki (also known for Shouma Amaku, Daimidaler), Sora Amamiya as Touka Kirishima (also known for Honoka Mitsui, The Irregular at Magic High School), Kana Hanazawa as Rize Kamishiro (also known for Akane Tsunemori, Psycho-Pass and Shiro, Deadman Wonderland), Mamoru Miyano as Shu Tsukiyama (also known for Light Yagami, Death Note and Okabe Rintarou, Steins;Gate), and Katsuyuki Konishi as Kotaro Amon (also known for Kamina, Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann).
The original work had its tenth volume from Sui Ishida released recently that announced adaptation. The series will star Natsuki Hanae as Ken Kaneki, Sora Amamiya as Toka Kirishima and Hanazawa Kanaas as Rize Kamishiro. Mamoru Miyano also joined the cast as Shu Tsukiyama along with Takayuki Sugo, Sumire Morohoshi, Katsuyuki Konishi, Yuichi Nakamura, Toshiyuki Toyonaga, Shintaro Asanuma and Takahiro Sakurai as Uta. Originally starting serialization in Young Jump back in September 2011, the series has done well for a first-time creator who has no other published works to his name in the field.
Plot concept: In modern day Tokyo, society lives in fear of Ghouls: mysterious creatures that look exactly like humans, yet hunger insatiably for their flesh. None of this matters to Ken Kaneki, a bookish and ordinary young man, until a dark and violent encounter turns him into the first ever Ghoul-human half-breed. Trapped between two worlds, Ken must survive the violent conflicts of warring Ghoul factions while attempting to learn more about Ghoul society, his newfound powers, and the fine line between man and monster.
