Thursday night showings of films, which used to be traditional “midnight” showings that now start as early as 7pm to get a couple of showings in, have become a pretty interesting and relatively solid way of sizing up the weekend outside of the usual metrics that are used, including social media trending. With Godzilla doing well there, including having fans of the main actors actively engaged in talking about it and driving up interest, the film had a couple of showings last night and the numbers are definitely better than a lot of people expected.
With it hitting more than 3,400 screens last night, it had a $9.3 million tally, with $2.1 million of it coming from IMAX showings. This is placing the film firmly in the over $70 million camp for the weekend if tends hold, but it could do a good bit over that. By comparison, Captain America: The Winter Soldier did $10.2 million in its opening night bid back in April
