Magica Wars Episode 5
Magica Wars Episode 5
Matsuri’s in the big city and about to learn what she signed up for.

What They Say:
In every decade or hundreds of years, the dragon moves its body as if it tosses about unconsciously. The movement becomes the distortion and causes impurity. This “impurity” lavishes an evil on people. And now, there is a huge indication of a distortion. Gods foresaw the greatest harm would happen to Japan, divide own power and give it off as a messenger of God (“Shinshi”) in Japan to gather mediums, or “Magica” who can expel the “impurity”. With the magical weapon the power of Gods, “Magica” will fight to stop evils in Japan.”

Content: (please note that content portions of a review may contain spoilers)
With Matsuri getting her introduction in the previous episode with how she got tricked into being a magical girl on the front line, we now see more of her and Toro together where it’s made clear once again that he’s an awful pervert. With them at the big city now and her in a schoolgirl uniform, she’s getting ready to understand what’s really involved with the job, something that Toro is a bit wary of really telling her about. Before they can really get into it, they end up in an argument about modern robotics which is amusing but distracting from how the giant robot on display at the school is being taken over by one of the evil spirits. This set ups for the fight in the next episode as Matsuri finally learns what she’s been conned into dealing with, so seeing her fear and anxiety feels pretty natural.

In Summary:
Slow moving series is slow as we continue to see how Magica Wars hasn’t quite figured out how to do things in a way within the four minute time frame to tell engaging stories. Breaking them into arcs isn’t a surprise, but it also feels like that we’re getting cut off just before things get good and that kind of damages the energy of the show. I do like the banter we get between Matsuri and Toro here, though Toro doesn’t exactly endear himself to viewers depending on how you view the way he treats her. There’s still some great looking designs and a sense of silliness here that works, but it’s all being reinforced by the idea that it shouldn’t be watched weekly but rather in one sitting.
