Brynhildr in the Darkness | Episode 2brynhldr-in-the-darkness-episode-02

EmperorBrandon: Getting to have more of the Elfen Lied vibe here, with a bit of romantic comedy stuff while at the same time having a very cruel, depressing backdrop, particularly seeing how Kana has to show her personality. Still rather intrigued on how it continues from here.

Sensuifu: This episode was at least better than the first, but the mix between serious drama and comedy is still pretty coarse. It just seems so forced..trying to transition into comedy yet can’t exactly get away from the drama that returns only seconds later, and vice versa. The one thing that’s keeping it at least somewhat interesting is the mystery behind Neko, Kana, et al. If they can get away from the hamfisted attempts at comedy, it might actually be good. So far, the humor is rather bleak. I’m for all kinds of humor, but here it’s not used effectively, which eventually ends up being more bland than what the creators we’re probably hoping to elicit.

In a sense, it’s like taking the mood from a show like Texhnolyze or Shin Sekai Yori and throwing in character tropes from a romcom. Maybe the show is supposed to be this way, but it seems like it’s trying to establish some balance among all the applicable themes, but fails on execution. If it’s focusing to be a dramedy, the direction needs some serious adjustments; it’s just not working. I don’t remember Elfen Lied being structured this way..might have to give it a rewatch soon.

EyeOfPain: Here’s my guess to the mystery (I haven’t read ahead):

~10 years ago, girls near death were taken in by a super secret government lab, and their families were told they didn’t survive. The girls were then put into stasis/suspended animation, while their personalities were extracted and their bodies copied (seems like something along the lines of the Almost People from Doctor Who), and they were trained as weapons. I’m not sure if the thing in the back of their necks is a remote control, or just something to keep the bodies from dissolving. I guess we’ll find out if other copies of the witches ever show up.
