‘Captain America’ Scores Third Weekend Box Office Win

2 min read

Captain America The Winter Soldier 6It’s good to be the Captain.

It’s not a feat too many films really pull off these days especially as the season gets busier, but Captain America: The Winter Soldier added another $26 million to its coffers over the quiet holiday weekend and got itself first place, staying ahead of Rio 2 once again. Cap has continued on well since it’s debut and it has topped $200 million domestically now and done another $385 million overseas with a $586 million total now, which is well over $200 million more than its predecessor which did $370 million over 112 days of release. In contrast, this new film has only been out for 17 days domestically. Suffice to say, it’s easy to see why a third installment got the green light so quickly and how important the film is for showing that the franchise and the Marvel Cinematic Universe overall can handle very different tones across all of its featuers.

The new genre film for the weekend that landed was Transcendence, which is the directorial debut of Wally Pfister, who has spend quite a few years doing some amazing cinematography for Christopher Nolan. Unfortunately, the film is landing with a thud for a number of reasons in the US with a $11 million take – and it was outpaced in China where it made $11.4 million.

Beyond that, it’s a relatively quite week with a few faith based movies doing well as they were targeted heavily to those audiences as opposed to the mainstream moviegoer. We also had the debut of A Haunted House 2, which did half of its predecessor and is like to tall off pretty quickly. Next weekend doesn’t have anything big opening other than The Other Woman in terms of newness so it’s likely to be similar to this weekend with a few tweaks.

Of note, Frozen has continued to do well worldwide and this weekend saw it hold the first place position in Japan again, now for the sixth straight week. The feature has done an amazing $104 million there since its debut.
