When I watched Divergent a few weekends ago, I began to wonder which Faction my favorite Star Wars characters would choose to join. Would I find some great fan art? Funny videos about the choosing ceremonies? Believe it or not, I think I’ve managed to find a mashup that does not (yet?) exist. I’m not going to let that stop me! I’ve chosen for them, picking a character for each of the Factions..
Abnegation – selfless service
Shmi does everything for her son. He is her center; he is her world. She worries, but she lets him podrace because she knows how much it means to him. Then Shmi does the most selfless thing she can — she lets him go. While we know that his story doesn’t have the most glorious of middles, no one can doubt her devotion and selflessness.
Amity – Peaceful and Cheerful
Artoo is ready to lend a helping… appendage… to anyone in need. He’ll gladly communicate with the computer on board a ship, repair damaged circuitry, and whistle a happy tune while submerged in a noisome swamp. He’d be a perfect addition to this Faction, though he may need to learn some farming techniques before heading out to the fields.
Dauntless – fearless thrillseekers
The Star Wars universe is filled with adrenaline junkies, but Han takes the prize. He rushes in where angels fear to tread. Han takes crazy risks, and says he only cares about himself, but he has the heart of a protector. Dauntless would be proud to call Solo one of their own.
Candor – frank and candid
Yes, that clip also gives away my next choice. C-3PO always says what is on his electronic mind. He prides himself on accurate translations, and doesn’t worry about hurt feelings. Does Han really need to be told the odds? Threepio certainly thinks so! Clarity and honesty, without the filter of tact, is C-3PO’s calling card.
Erudite – Curious and Astute
No surprises here– Yoda is my choice for Erudite. He loves to learn, and loves to teach. Watching him interact with youngling Jedi is a joy. Yoda knows that the only way to continue to grow in knowledge is to “unlearn” old lessons. Many of his concerns about the Dark Side are caused by the way the presence of that darkness limits his ability to see the patterns of the future. Sit beside Master Yoda and he’ll help you grow wiser.
I struggled with where to place Leia and Padme. Both women lived a life of service. Both were curious, eager learners. Both sought a path of peace, even in the midst of battle. Both showed dauntless bravery in the face of danger. Perhaps the only Faction for them is that of the Divergent.
