Chaika – The Coffin Princess | Episode 1 | TFP Review

Chaika - The Coffin Princess Episode #1

Jun Kuga: Sporadic. Shoulder-a-coffin Kuro. Wannabe. Siblings. Ninjas? False moe. Eyebrows. Unicorn? Swords. Magic. Random violence. Meh.

EmperorBrandon: Haha… perfect response. I’m not sure if I can get used to Chaika talking in fragments…

GingaDaiuchuu: That wasn’t one of the best I’ve seen so far, but it was still on the higher end. Interesting concepts and nice action animation worth checking out, but I’m not a big fan of the extremely infantile moe female lead. I’ll accept these siblings as some of the least incestuous so far, so that’s better than most.

EyeOfPain: I thought they were much more teasing than flirting. It seemed like Akari had a lot of respect for Toru, but doesn’t like his current lazy life. I’m curious to learn more about saboteurs and wizards in this world, and that was one of the most unusual “unicorns” I’ve seen in fiction.

Clearly I didn’t dislike it as much as others, but mostly, it just didn’t turn me off right away. I also never read Shoulder-a-Coffin Kuro, so no comparisons there.

Momoka Kibi: As one who read Kuro, I wouldn’t really compare it to Chaika. Other than both series having a girl with a Coffin, they are completely different types of series. Plus I get the feeling neither series invented the idea of carrying coffins.

Buckeye: The similarities from Scrapped Princess are there with a princess who are dead girls walking, and a menace who looks just like Socom. Anyway, it’s a decent first episode, enough to keep me watching for a little while longer. But it just isn’t standing out. It felt pretty meh for the most part. Not to mention, something just feels off about Chaika’s face. This show is a lower priority for me, anyway, given that just about every show that I have watched so far has passed the first episode test.

Hitsugi Amachi: I don’t really need to repeat in detail the faults already noted by others: Chaika’s pidgin Japanese (an obvious attempt to show that she’s a foreigner who doesn’t know the local language, but comes this method ends up making her come across as someone with serious mental deficiencies or the mental age of a 2-year-old) and Akari’s brother complex including the by now obnoxious “Don’t you dare criticize my perfect brother even if you are my perfect brother. Calling me stupid is fine, however.”

My eye muscles are aching.

On the positive side, the action was not too bad and the animation is not so bad. The general story concept is kind of predictable and unoriginal, but the execution on that score has been passable so far.

stardf29: I have no idea what you all are talking about. This was awesome. Sure, it’s more focused on the action right now than on the worldbuilding, but even from what we get, there’s definitely something interesting going on here, and I’m definitely very much looking forward to seeing what comes of all this.

And Chaika is awesome. She’s cute, she’s concise in speech, and she wields a giant magic gun that can split a malicious unicorn cleanly in half. What’s not to love?  Seriously, though, what’s wrong with her fragmented way of speech? I guess I can see how it makes her seem infantile, but that’s not the feel I get from her. Definitely interested in what that first sequence means as far as who exactly she is.

Momoka Kibi: Her fragmented speech does show she’s having some problems. However I have to agree that alone doesn’t make her infantile. At least she does seem to be trying. Plus it could be worse, she could be doing nothing but saying her own name & struggling with that too.

On a side note, I’m glad a series had the guts to have a Unicorn that was actually evil instead of always having them be defenseless poor innocent creatures. Watch the show several episodes later make it out to be the Unicorn was only evil because of humans polluting….

stardf29: Perhaps I’m biased because I’m coming into this off Ichiro Sasaki’s past successes, but this is definitely looks to be the best action-fantasy show in a good while. (Log Horizon didn’t have that much action, so it doesn’t count.  ) If they can keep this up and flesh out the story, world, and characters while continuing to be strong in all the other actions, this should definitely be among the better shows this season.

Momoka Kibi: Speaking of which, Scrapped Princess was one of the better shows I watched during its time. So being remind of that series does help. Of course for those who hated Scrapped Princess being remind of that series won’t help. Regardless, I definitely need to watch a bit more of it as well.

If nothing else Chaika’s eyebrows are amazing & thus I need to watch more because of that.

Sensuifu: All I got from this episode was whether or not Chaika would be even more powerful with a unibrow instead.

Momoka Kibi: It would actually be hilarious if she had a powered up form that gave her a unibrow. Hey if characters can have their hair turn gold then she can have a unibrow.
