Inugami-san to Nekoyama-san Episode 1
It’s hard being a cat person but being considered dog-like.

What They Say:
The series follows two high school girls; Yachiyo Inugami, a dog-like girl who loves cats, and Suzu Nekoyama, a cat-like girl who loves dogs, and the strange relationship their respective habits form.

Based on the manga by Kuzushiro that began back in 2011, Inugami-san to Nekoyama-san is a new twelve episode series animated by studio Seven that’s attempting to carve out a bit of the short form market this season. It revolves around two sixteen year old high school girls named Yachiyo and Suzu that each have their particular likes when it comes to animals, which means certain mannerisms are attributed to them as well. Of course, their mannerisms belie what they actually like as we get the cute “cat-like” Yachiyo who will do dog-like things such as shaking hands in the way a dog would and all that. She also has some comical views of others such as when she views Suzu as a cat in heat and it gets pretty pervy for a few seconds. Between that and some of the other aspects, Yachiyo has the elder student role down well here and completely has amusingly awkward views of others as she interacts with them.

In Summary:
Though the episode does give us a good bit about the two main girls here, it’s one that’s largely told from Yachiyo’s point of view with a couple of amusing points made by her friend Aki. Suzu has her moments as well but seems like in some ways she’s playing the straight man with how she deals with things. The cat and dog side definitely takes a front and center approach here and it has its moments of making you grin since Yachiyo has such an amusing way of viewing things, but like a lot of short-form shows it’s kind of stilted overall. But the show has a lot going for it in this form since it is more laid back and not spastic while having some great wild-takes along the way that makes you like the characters and the situations all the more. Cautiously optimistic here.
