Witch Craft Works Episode 12 (Finale)witch-craft-works-episode-12

Nork22: The final episode has Evermillion showing up again to help Honoka save everyone in the city for the cost of his life (plus Ayaka as her soul/magic is tied to his). Just as he was about to sign the contract, Ayaka severed her contract with Honoka, and essentially he saved the entire town on his own. Talk about complicated contracts.

This saves Weekend but she has to run away since she’s out of magical power. But Chronoire turns up and proceeds to beat her up. Then Kazane shows up as well and they both go at it.

All’s well that ends well.

Final Thoughts: Well I had it wrong on my first impression that this show would turn out into a harem filled mess but alas I was slapped hard by the sheer insanity of the show. The first few bad guys were just some sort of challenge for Honoka to improve his magic, but you never seem to get a sort of threat from that. It never seem to take itself seriously, almost to the point it went to insane levels of absurdity. All in all, it was a highly entertaining show from start to finish. Just wish they would animate more if possible.

Hitsugi Amachi: That’s pretty much my thoughts about the whole thing as well. Completely absurd, but entertaining for the most part. I didn’t like the Weekend arc so much because she and her friends were much too “serious” in their villainy, unlike Chronoire or Medusa, who were both a bit more comical. At least they came back to the slightly more comic unseriousness at the end, where Chronoire plays with Weekend and then Kazane and Chronoire have a loopy final battle. Evermillion was also rather funny, but we’ve learned, at the end, something slightly interesting about her: she’s not Good (with the capital G). She’s just extremely Powerful. We should have guessed that to some extent, since the Tower Witches, including truly evil ones such as Weekend, wouldn’t be going after her if they would not be able to control her power once that have taken it for themselves.

It would be nice to see where the story goes from here.

bctaris: Understandable, but I didn’t mind the intensity turning up with Weekend only because the show built up to it carefully, with similar allusions to serious business scattered throughout, like with Chronorie’s actions. It wasn’t just thrust on us. And I couldn’t help loving the unique BGM used as he restored the city.

And Power seems to be what this world is all about–Tower witches seeking it, Workshop witches hoarding it; no one really being honest about it.

But speaking of Chronorie, boy did she finally bare her teeth, so to speak. I suppose she’s quite serious about “eating” witches–or their power, anyway(?). I liked how that final fight with her and Kazane was blocked out, a tying up of loose ends in the story, but not distracting from the climax already achieved a few scenes earlier.

Shiroe Hane: Did they explain exactly what the contract between them is, why it was formed and why they don’t remember it? If they did, I must have blinked or something.

Sly05: Nope, the best we got was vague hints. I also wonder what’s up with Takamiya’s mom. Given that his sister is a witch and Takamiya himself has a not as of yet well defined special power, I find it suspicious that his mom is presented as a normal human without much knowledge of the existence of magic.

A pretty good ending to the series. I thought the adaptation turned out very well. If I have any complaints, its that the series tends to rely a little too much on Kagari’s invincibility or Evermillion saving the day, but that is in the manga too and the series doesn’t ever really take itself seriously enough to let me hold that against it too much. It’s mostly just silly fun with a great sense of humour.

I hope it gets another season once the manga has a chance to get a little further ahead.
