Kill la Kill Episode 24 (Finale) | TFP Review
GingaDaiuchuu: Wow, that was one hell of a finale. I’m sorry for any doubts I had, Trigger. Granted, I still have my complaints about the series, and it sure as hell wasn’t another Gurren Lagann, but it definitely proves that this team knows how to make this kind of an epic finale more than once. It’s incredibly similar to the point of being predictable, but I don’t mind that in the least, and I loved every second. I hope they all get together for something else and manage to spin it in a new way while still keeping it this exciting.
EmperorBrandon: Most notable part of the whole episode for me was Senketsu’s death scene. So epic and emotional, but of course the nude catching as Ryuuko comes down soon after was quite awesome as well. Glad to see the three girls together on a date in the end, and the first ED playing again.
Library-chan: Well, if anything, the whole catch scene made the episode. Everybody pitching in is hilarious. Of course, it had to be Satsuki “Nee-san” catching her imouto first (while screaming her name). The fanartists are going to have a field day with this one. Good god, that’s A LOT of naked! A LOT! Of course the scene afterwards is great too. “Okairi.” “Taidaima, Nee-san.” Squeeeeeeeeeeeeeee! And then there’s the god-tier end credits where Satsuki, Ryouko, and Mako go on a dateo. My gosh, Satsuki, what did you do to your hair?
Bravo, Trigger, bravo. It’s nice to see you went with the ending where Satsuki-nee-san and Ryouko can live out normal lives as normal sisters.
Hitsugi Amachi: That was definitely an epic ending for an epic series. Though I think the comment to highlight at the end there is Tsumugu’s. “We can finally get dressed?”
The date at the end was very cute. Cute, embarrassed Satsuki? Plain awesome and something hard to have guessed after the first few episodes of the series.
Just plain craziness. Keep up the nonsensical, Trigger. Just keep on doing that.
Buckeye: That was just epic there at the end, seeing how Senketsu totally was overpowered there, plus the hordes of naked people there who had their threads given to Senketsu. That just makes for a great finale. And that date at the end there is really nice as for once, Ryuko isn’t wearing something that’s a size too small for her and Satsuki looks much better with shorter hair. The end result is just great.
Overall, while this show was awesome, it did have a few problems, with most of them disappearing by the time the second half rolls around. It started off as totally crazy, repetitive, and full of stuff intended to serve as eye candy. But once the story came into full focus starting with the appearance of the killer of Ryuko’s father, this show really takes off and only got better from there. The twists and turns, as well as the hot-blooded action really makes this show special. And then there is the soundtrack that is awesome. Trigger definitely delivers on the hype producing something that captures the spirit of Gurren Lagaan, but totally doing something different.
bctaris: “WE ARE EVERYTHING!”
There it is. Following from its “not making sense is kind of our thing” in the penultimate episode (repeated here with a line this episode claiming pride in being nonsensical), it’s a (fittingly swaggering and vainglorious) declaration of Trigger’s ultimate goal for an over-the-top thrill ride, like this was all an attempt to push these ideas and visual concepts as far as they can, for the moment, go. Freed a little from the weight and expectation of drawn-out plotting in a story like Gurren Laggan, they just focused on doing what they do best as well as they could.
And what a ride. Visually, the most stunning and creative anime TV series in a long time. If not so far in the medium. (Only the anthologized structure of Space Dandy’s animation compares right now, but only then from its cumulative effect.) And the story, not easily forgotten, went just deep enough without losing its tight hold around the visual joy and mayhem.
But it was also, at the end, simple good fun. All that clever composition and design and music and absurd dialog would have been too much to bear if the story and characters were not so much damn fun, all on their own.
