Don’t balk too quickly, especially with the parent company of HBO being Warner Bros., who certainly likes a franchise. With the fourth season of Game of Thrones getting its debut in New York at a premiere, some interesting tidbits have come alight as the novelist George R.R. Martin has indicated that there’s some potential about it and some active discussion.

“It all depends on how long the main series runs,” Martin said. “Do we run for seven years? Do we run for eight? Do we run for 10? The books get bigger and bigger (in scope). It might need a feature to tie things up, something with a feature budget, like $100 million for two hours. Those dragons get real big, you know.”

While that can provide for something to do in a few years time, based on there being probably another 3-4 seasons worth, there’s also another angle that could work. The author talked about the potential of bringing Tales of Dunk and Egg to the big screen, which is a series of prequel novellas that deal with characters that existed in Westeros some ninety years before where the TV series takes place.

“They could be the basis for [a film],” Martin revealed. “I have written these three stories, and I have about a dozen more.”

With Warner Bros. having worked the whole Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter universes, expanding Game of Thrones to the big screen seems like we might have some solid fantasy fare ahead of us.
