Tonari no Seki-kun Episode 11
Climb that mountain, little brown bear!

What They Say:
Class is in session at a certain high school. While the teacher isn’t looking, a boy named Seki-kun is playing games by himself on his desk, while the girl who sits next to him, Yokoi-san, observes (or interferes or participates). Each time, Seki-kun’s games reach unimaginable levels… And this time the game is…

As the series brings in more characters that provide for some dialogue, we get more views which helps to expand the time wasting in fun ways, which worked well for the previous episode. Getting it so other see Seki and Yokoi in some sort of unrequited relationship is definitely amusing. As the classes go on, and back to our normal environment, Seki just can’t be normal when you get down to it. He hits up a cute approach this time around though as he takes out a tiny stuffed teddy bear and a camping kit for him to play with. That totally wins over Yokoi in a big way as she just finds it utterly adorable. Shoujo eyes have returned.

Where it gets fun is that it’s done so seriously as the white bear is looking for its friend, which is a brown bear attached to the back of the student in front of Seki. Seki has gone elaborate in his time wasting here with string and movement and that totally makes it a big bit, especially since the bear gets tossed all around, taking the story of its life in new directions. When you add in the visualization that Yokoi has, it becomes a hilarious mountain climbing sequence that she totally becomes wrapped up in. And not one without its challenges either, such as Maeda’s collar and his own physical motions that threaten the whole absurdly silly gag.

In Summary:
While a lot of what we’ve had has focused on various games and reworkings of them, as well as just the silly fun of various items, this one goes for more of a toy angle and it ends up involving another student directly, albeit with him unaware. The whole thing has a lot of great comical tension to it as it unfolds and ends with a pretty big number where the brown bear has a significant threat to its existence. There’s just something fun about the challenge of climbing a mountain that makes this work so well, but you also have to love the way Maeda is made a part of the whole thing. And how Yokoi once again gets in trouble while not actively being a part of things. Simply put, Seki is unstoppable in his time wasting.
