James Mangold Talks ‘The Wolverine’ Sequel

When James Mangold stepped in to take over The Wolverine after Darren Aronofsky left the project for a number of reasons after the disaster in Japan, there was some uncertainty as to whether the film would work. A good part of that uncertainty was just how poorly received X-Men Origins: Wolverine was, which killed other characters being tackled. But now with the film done and over with, released to theaters and home video, talk of a sequel is naturally underway. The Wolverine has made $415 million in theatrical box office alone (and just started its run in China at that) and now it looks like Mangold will be returning to it, albeit at a later date than some might hope.

With this news, it fits in with some recent “figuring it out” statements from Hugh Jackman that knows he’s got only so much longer than he can play the character, or potentially wants to play it. So there’s some expectation that Days of Future Past might be his last outing depending on how much involvement the character will have in X-Men: Apocalypse, which should be minimal to none as Bryan Singer has talked about it being all about the First Class crew unlike Days of Future Past.

So any potential Wolverine sequel won’t be sighted until 2017 at the earliest.
