‘Non-Stop’ Takes Box Office As ‘Frozen’ Cross Billion Dollar Mark

There was a fair bit of attention on the box office this weekend even as most of Hollywood got together to celebrate themselves with the Academy Awards. The competition wasn’t exactly fierce in a way, but more of another moment of curiosity as the compressed and reworked Bible TV series was turned into Son of God and given a wide release, testing the waters for how Noah may go later this year. The film certainly did very well with $26.5 million, a bigger number than most religion themed movies go, but it couldn’t take the top spot as Liam Neeson did that with Non-Stop. This is a good sign for Neeson after some of his recent films have been about ten million under that for openings and it’s on track with some other good first quarter action movies that find a decent life. With a $50 million budget, it still has a bit to go but it hasn’t opened anywhere other than in North American so far.

Not surprising is that The LEGO Movie is finally shifting away from the top spot, though with a mild drop overall as it garnered another $21 million, pushing it over $200 million domestically with another $121 million overseas. It’s expected to drop more quickly as Mr. Peabody & Sherman comes out next week, but there’s so much positive word of mouth that it’ll continue to do well for awhile and potentially hit $300 million domestically.

This weekend saw the further release of The Wind Rises, going from a handful of limited screens to just under 500, and it did well with a $1.6 million take considering the minimal amount of advertising for it out there. The film previously earned $112 million in its non-US run.
