Tonari no Seki-kun Episode 8
Sometimes the pieces aren’t what they seem.

What They Say:
Class is in session at a certain high school. While the teacher isn’t looking, a boy named Seki-kun is playing games by himself on his desk, while the girl who sits next to him, Yokoi-san, observes (or interferes or participates). Each time, Seki-kun’s games reach unimaginable levels… And this time the game is…

Seki has moved back to one of his previous games by bringing the shogi pieces out again, which surprises Yokoi since he hasn’t exactly been all about reusing things. What he does through is to come up with a large army of pieces to go after a promoted pawn that’s aligned with a new piece, the princess. That makes for some comedy from the start since the large army is big and powerful, but we also see how true love between the pieces comes into play, working the old adage of love conquers all. The story between the two really goes all over the map here, even bringing back the Gold General, and just having a blast with how involved Yokoi gets in the story that she’s creating just as much as he is.

In Summary:
I’ll admit some trepidation when I saw the show going back to the shogi well with this episode, but they just have such a fun time with it as Seki continues to manipulate a world in game like a god that it’s comical just to see what he comes up with. And just like before, Yokoi’s getting caught up in it simply makes it all the more amusing to watch since she becomes so invested in it against her better interest that you simply have to grin. Good stuff and I’m looking forward to the next time these shogi characters appear again in the future.
