Matthew McConaughey Talks ‘Interstellar’

2 min read

InterstellarWhile the first trailer for Interstellar has left a lot of people feeling kind of flat about it and others feeling inspirational, it’s been pretty quiet otherwise for the next Christopher Nolan film, which is pretty much the norm. What we do end up getting though are some small teases and nuggets that you can try and extrapolate things from but also just to get a feel for the production. The latest little morsels come from  Variety, where a full piece interview is being done with Matthew McConaughey. McConaughey has been on a huge upswing for awhile now, coming seemingly from his performance in Magic Mike which was aided by Mud and other films. He’s also getting quiet the accolades for his performance in the striking and thoroughly engaging short run TV series True Detective on HBO which is must-see television for us.

In talking about Interstellar, McConaughey had this to say on Nolan’s work: “Here’s what I can tell you, It’s the most ambitious thing he’s ever done. And he’s done some ambitious stuff. … There’s no fucking around on set. He’s a great problem solver. In that way, he’s very indie. Here’s a guy who could have whatever budget he wants — and we finished shooting early.”

Stories of how casting is done for a film is always interesting and there’s a lot of variety out there to it when you consider the personalities that populates creative industries and especially Hollywood. That was covered as well as McConaughey talked about what was involved. “He came up to me and said, ‘“Mud.” I love that movie.’ I sat down with him for about 2½ hours at his house. Not one word came up about “Interstellar.” I walked out not sure what to think. I mean, he’s not a guy who takes general meetings.”

Of course, Nolan has some kind things to say about McConaughey as well. “Matthew works from the inside out. He approaches a character from a deep human understanding, refusing to take shortcuts to an emotional connection with the audience — all while never losing sight of the demands of the overall narrative.”
