Yes, the song is certainly still stuck in our heads and we know that it’s something that’s also in quite a few execs heads as The LEGO Movie had a very strong second weekend as it had only a 29% drop, which is really great to see. That has it bringing in an additional $49 million for a just under $130 million domestic take since it’s debut. Add in another $51 million in half the territories out there over the past two weeks and it’s got some great numbers to work with. We’re curious to see what the impact is on the toys themselves, but it’s hard to tell since ancedotally, the local stores have nothing from the movie left on the shelves and lots of other sections from other licensed properties are pretty much emptying out as well.
Robocop started on Wednesday and got caught in the storm, making for a harder rise and word of mouth to get out there, but it did another $21 million on the $5 million it did during the week but it simply faced a lot of competition as counterprogramming as there were simply a lot of romantic themed movies out there for couples and romantics to choose from. About Last Night, a remake of the 80’s version, did $27 million in about 2200 screens which is quite good and it did much better than the Endless Love remake at $13 million. Winter’s Tale debuted this weekend as well but truly underperformed with a $7.7 million take.
Another movie that did well but will get lost in the shuffle of news is Monuments Men, which had a 32% drop and did $15 million, bringing its domestic take to $44 million. It’s had a limited overseas release so far with just $9 million on its overall $70 million budget.
This weekend is one that’s always a bit odd because of its heavy focus on romantic themed movies, but it was also one this year where there was no real clear winner or buzz for it. Next year will be very different since this is when the Fifty Shades of Gray film will debut. It’s also a holiday week this week for many schools with winter vacation and that will skew the cume overall for a lot of releases since people will be going during the week. While my significant other and I took in Winter’s Tale yesterday, a very hard to adapt book without the right people in front of or behind the camera, we’re taking in Robocop tonight. So definitely pay attention to the overall cume next weekend.
