There was a lot of skepticism about the Robocop remake when it was first announced and put into production, but as it brought on a pretty interesting cast along the way and the various promos and trailers have helped to change opinions nicely. The film is getting a staggered roll out internationally and this weekend saw its debut in Malaysia, Taiwan and Singapore. These territories responded very well to it as the Sony Pictures film brought in $5.5 million in those three areas. That may not seem like much when compared to what we’re used to for a North American debut of a big picture, but it’s on par with Iron Man back in 2008 and that went on to do quite well there. The feature is set to open in another 40 territories next weekend before it begins its North American run.

The films comes from Jose-Padhilha and stars Joel Kinnamon, Gary Oldman, Michael Keaton, Samuel L. Jackson, Abbie Cornish, Jackie Earle Haley, Michael K. Williams, Jay Baruchel, Jennifer Ehle and Marianne Jean-Baptiste. It debuts in North America on February 12th, 2014.

Plot concept: The year is 2028 and multinational conglomerate OmniCorp is at the center of robot technology. Their drones are winning American wars around the globe and now they want to bring this technology to the home front. Alex Murphy (Kinnaman) is a loving husband, father and good cop doing his best to stem the tide of crime and corruption in Detroit. After he is critically injured in the line of duty, OmniCorp utilizes their remarkable science of robotics to save Alex’s life. He returns to the streets of his beloved city with amazing new abilities, but with issues a regular man has never had to face before.
